Ten C, for those who don't know, is an Italian outerwear brand that sits somewhere between Stone Island and Nigel Coburn. The two founders, Paul Harvey and Alessandro Panghetti, perfectly combine technology with heritage, innovative clothing with classic military design. For me, some of their jackets are the best in their class - their M-65 is almost the platonic ideal of the M-65, a fishtail parka that I love more than anywhere else. Like most good things, however, they are very expensive.
When I got to the liner, I didn't even have ten C outerwear, but I figured I'd buy it "just in case." (This is the twisted logic of someone who likes clothes). “I must take it if one day

Well, sometimes, I manage to salvage one of these parkas, but the jacket I wear the most is still the original body liner - not layered under my parka, but the outer one. Dress as a one piece. I mainly pair it with slim-straight jeans from 3sixteen, a zig-zag sweater from Somewhere Guys and some colorful zip-up boots from Capital (all seen below). It's a great in-between piece when I want something a little warmer than a cotton jacket, but don't want to deal with a lot of heavy outerwear. Basically the perfect thing for spring.
The secret to lining insulation is the coating, where the individual chambers trap heat. Inside, any material can be used for batting, which is the technical term for a thermal intermediate layer. Sometimes you find cotton inside, which doesn't have much fluff, but it comes in different thicknesses. This is probably what your grandmother used to make her quilts. Generally, though, you'll find feathers or some sort of synthetic (the latter is sometimes polyester or microfiber). Their superior quality makes them warmer and lighter than cotton and will hold up well after many washes.
Unfortunately, Ten C no longer manufactures this liner. (See? The "just in case" logic works). It has since been replaced with puffier lace sleeves with more voluminous padding. I don't think the design itself works either, but who knows - I didn't think it would be anything either.
However, since owning this investment, I've noticed investment-inspired styles popping up all over the place. Rag & Bone designed a womenswear collection a few years ago, which they debuted at their FW16 runway show. One was an olive, onion-colored, fur-lined Celine-inspired look, but it wasn't too far from what you might imagine in a menswear collection. They were essentially advanced versions of military surplus designs. Praise was exchanged for sheep. gros instead of leather. Although the jackets had button holes in the front like you find in the original lining, they were clearly meant to be worn on their own, not tucked into a parka.

Of course, Japanese workwear labels like Kapital and Visvem have their own versions. The Capital is a lightweight liner designed to be worn under their signature rings (which itself is a cross between the Japanese kimono, with T-sleeves, and the American military jacket). Cotton Sheep in San Francisco has them and will take phone orders. When tucked into a coat, it will add a little extra warmth, but considering the brand's quirky and sometimes outrageous twists on workwear, military and casual wear, it can of course be worn on its own. Be (as long as you like capital style). With its large hood, shawl-like collar and shiny fabric, the liner almost looks like a cropped boxer.
The Visvim iris liner is a bit simpler. They've done it in standard military colors like black, navy and olive green in the past, but they've also done it in dusty pink. The jackets have grosgrain trim, a front zipper and a crew neck design (which can be good if you're wearing a hoodie, although I like them with regular sweaters). As with all things Visvim, the price is quite steep - around $1,850 for what should be a mid-range model. At least this season's version is reversible (I guess?). You can find them at top high street boutiques like SSENSE, Union and Haven.
More affordable is Uniqlo, currently on sale for under $70, but my favorite budget-friendly options are Mellow's originals. You see it most often in womenswear — a variety of styles that borrow heavily from menswear, southwestern design, and workwear. But given their shared masculine roots, these are the types that can find a home in your closet.
Millshorp liners are designed to be slightly larger to fit actual military outerwear. Some satins are a little loose, the sleeves are a little loose, and the body is loose. You should be able to fit in idiosyncratic designs. However, it is not meant to look like an embroidered dress. At the same time, they can add some personality to a work outfit, and depending on how much money you're willing to spend, they can also be very affordable (some shirts can be as cheap as $20, though you should expect to spend somewhere around $150 ). Your best bet is to check your local retailers and Millshorpe warehouses, as this is the easiest way to get the right size, but if you plan to shop online, here are some keywords to search for (as well as some recommendations sellers): New with tags: A new, unused and unused item in the original packaging (like the original ...
